Humpback whales are extraordinary animals, known for their impressive size. They can grow between 40 and 60 feet in length and weigh up to 40 tons.

Besides their size, male whales are famous for their complex songs, which can last for hours and be heard over great distances.

It is believed these songs play an important role in mating, But, what’s truly impressive is that each humpback whale population has its unique song, which can change over time.

Recently, a humpback whale was spotted in Washington State’s Salish Sea in the United States. However, something about this whale was truly unusual and left everyone in shock.

The humpback whale spotted in the Salish Sea appeared to have no tail. What was most concerning was the fact that these whales rely on their flukes for movement, and losing them can be fatal.

Experts who examined the photos and videos of the whale assume that it likely lost its tail due to entanglement in fishing gear or other marine debris.

Since then, no one has been able to spot the whale again. Unfortunately, such accidents are not uncommon.

Numerous marine animals get entangled in fishing gear, posing significant risks. Last year, there were 16 reported humpback entanglements off the coasts of Oregon, California, and Washington.

Animals in such conditions often cannot be helped. Because of that, experts remind people to be responsible when using fishing equipment to reduce potential risks of entanglements and other injuries like this poor whale had to endure.
