Vet Refuses To Euthanize A Puppy With A Birth Defect And Changes His Life Instead

The euthanasia of pets is one of those topics in the animal world that people have mixed opinions about.

Some argue that it is humane to euthanize animals born with severe disabilities, while others claim that every life deserves a chance.

The noble vet who’s at the heart of today’s story definitely falls into the latter category, as evidenced by his recent good deed.

Meet Oliver Reeve, a veterinarian and pharmacologist, who recently saved one special pup from being put to eternal sleep.

According to a recent post on his X (formerly Twitter) profile, a seven-week-old Goldendoodle puppy was brought to his veterinary clinic one evening for euthanasia.

The puppy’s owner, unable to cope with the pup’s birth defect, believed euthanasia was the only option.

Fortunately, Dr. Reeve had other plans for this good boy. He shared on social media:

“A 7 week old puppy got brought into the clinic to be euthanised tonight. Very sad. Any way, meet my new son.”

Choosing compassion over termination, this kind-hearted veterinarian decided to adopt the puppy and welcome him into his family with open arms and a heart full of love.

He named him Toby after which their story was ready to unfold.

Dr. Reeve’s decision received widespread acclaim in the comments section of his post, with people worldwide applauding his choice to adopt Toby.

Most of them criticized Toby’s previous owner, deeming his decision to euthanize him as cruel and evil. One person commented:

“Anyone that would even consider bringing a healthy pet to the vets to be put down is an utter scumbag that should face charges. It makes me rage.”

Another wrote:

“How anyone could do that to such a beautiful dog makes me despair.”

However, understanding the complexities surrounding euthanasia, Dr. Reeve chose not to judge.

He refrained from discussing Toby’s specific birth defect and instead commended the previous owner for seeking veterinary care rather than abandoning the dog or resorting to worse actions.

He stated:

“People shouldn’t be shamed for seeking veterinary care and electing euthanasia or surrender. Vets are not the police and we don’t want people reluctant to see us because they fear judgment.”

He later added:

“Taking a puppy to a vet and electing humane euthanasia is far better than letting the puppy suffer or dumping it – which definitely happens. Euthanasia may not seem palatable but it is a treatment option that preserves welfare and there can be lots of reasons why it’s chosen.”

Dr. Reeve continued sharing Toby’s journey with his followers.

After the first operation, he updated everyone on the progress, explaining that Toby would need one more surgery in a few months to be fully recovered.

He affectionately referred to Toby as a “brave little man.” Isn’t that adorable?

Before Toby joined the family, Dr. Reeve’s household already included several furry residents: a dog, a cat, a rat (yes, you read that right), and three rabbits.

Joining such a vibrant family was the blessing Toby truly deserved.

From day one, Toby’s favorite companion was Danni the dog, who, after some initial confusion, warmly accepted Toby as her new buddy.

Today, the two are inseparable; they do everything together, but their favorite activity is definitely napping next to each other.

I’m so happy little Toby got a second chance at life. He’s now on the road to recovery, and I wish him all the best.
