10 Smells That Mice Hate

10 Smells That Mice Hate

Mice may be small, but their sense of smell is incredibly strong. They sniff to find food and shelter, and unfortunately, that often leads them straight into our homes.

While securely storing food and blocking entry points are essential steps, you can also use certain strong scents to help keep mice away naturally. Here are some effective, natural and eco-friendly ways to keep rodents away!

1. Peppermint Oil

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil is one of the best choices for deterring mice. The sharp, minty scent is pleasant for us but overwhelming for mice, who tend to avoid it.

Place a few drops on cotton balls and position them near common entry points or areas where you’ve spotted mice. Just remember to refresh the cotton balls every few days for the best effect.

2. Cinnamon

Cinnamon

The spicy, warm scent of cinnamon is another natural deterrent for mice. Put cinnamon sticks in areas where mice might enter, like inside cabinets, closets, or along baseboards.

This strong aroma not only keeps mice at bay but also gives your home a cozy scent.

3. Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne Pepper

With its intense heat, cayenne pepper can make any area unwelcoming for mice.

Sprinkling a small amount around places where you suspect mice activity can irritate their noses and discourage them from returning.

But be cautious, especially if you have pets or small children, as cayenne can irritate them as well.

4. Mothballs

Mothballs

Mothballs contain naphthalene, which has a pungent smell that can be effective at deterring mice. However, use these with caution, as inhaling too much of this chemical can be harmful to humans and pets.

If you opt for mothballs, place them in out-of-the-way spots where mice are likely to hide, such as attics or basements.

5. Vinegar

Vinegar

Vinegar has a strong, sour smell that can make mice steer clear. Make a simple spray by mixing equal parts vinegar and water, then mist areas where you’ve noticed signs of mice.

This spray can help keep them from returning while also serving as a natural disinfectant.

6. Dryer Sheets

Dryer Sheets

Though typically used for laundry, dryer sheets also have a strong scent that mice don’t enjoy. Simply place a few dryer sheets in potential entry points or hiding spots, and replace them weekly.

Besides keeping mice away, they’ll leave a fresh, clean smell in your home.

7. Clove Oil

Clove Oil

Clove oil, with its potent, spicy scent, can be a helpful repellent.

Soak a few cotton balls in clove oil and place them where you suspect mice have been. You can also leave whole cloves in corners and cabinets. The scent may be delightful for you, but it’s strong enough to drive away mice.

8. Eucalyptus Oil

Eucalyptus Oil

Known for its fresh, minty aroma, eucalyptus oil can also be effective at keeping rodents away. A few drops placed around entry points or problem areas can help deter mice from sticking around.

Plus, it has antibacterial properties, making it a helpful addition for household cleaning, as well.

9. Chilli Oil Or Powder

Chilli Oil Or Powder

Chili has a powerful effect on mice due to its irritating nature. Sprinkle chili powder or use chili oil in areas where you suspect rodent activity to make these spaces unpleasant for them.

Just be cautious, as the spice can also be irritating to people and your pets.

10. Cedarwood Oil

Cedarwood oil has a pleasant woodsy smell to humans but can act as a mild toxin to rodents.

A few drops in areas you want to keep mouse-free can make the space feel unwelcoming for them, while adding a pleasant natural aroma to your home.
