Dear animal lovers, brace yourself for an amazing story about a sanctuary located in Parksville, New York.
This is not your everyday animal sanctuary, because Arthur’s Acres is a haven only for pigs and adorable tiny piglets!
Todd Friedman, the founder and the heart of Arthur’s Acres Animal Sanctuary, committed to animals years ago.
He became a vegetarian at first and later on opted for a full-on vegan lifestyle. Being a witness to all the cruel things some farm animals go through, it was the only option for Todd.
With this new lifestyle, a new passion was born. To save as many mistreated animals from such overcrowded farms as possible!
Together with his friend, Todd found a suitable land to make a sanctuary. However, once they arrived there, he soon learned the sad truth.
The previous owner of the land had a farm and sadly, the conditions these poor animals were living in were concerning.
This worried Todd, and he was determined to buy the land and save the last remaining animal on the farm – a pig named Arthur! As he described on their website:
“Then and there I knew this was the place. It felt as if all of the animals, past and present on this property, were calling to us in that moment and asking us to help them. Arthur was their face, their voice. We knew we could do just that. And so, the journey began. Arthur’s Acres now stands, no longer a negative place, but one with an abundance of love, kindness, positivity and compassion.”
This is how the sanctuary from today’s story came to life. Todd makes sure to rescue pigs and piglets from desperate situations, such as overcrowded farms, abandoned pet piglets, and injured pigs without someone to take care of them.
The absolute star of this sanctuary and the proclaimed mayor of Arthur’s Acres is piglet Mikey – who had more than a rough start in life.
The piglets living here have acres of farm to roam around, more than enough warm barns to sleep in, and of course endless love from the volunteers at the sanctuary.
Todd and his staff even made tiny swimming pools filled with water and mud, so they can cool off in those hot summer days!
Some of them have high separation anxiety, so Todd even takes them along on car rides while he’s doing some errands.
Before I came across Todd and his amazing sanctuary, I had no idea just how many pigs were mistreated early on in their lives.
Thanks to Todd, hundreds of these piglets were saved and they got a second chance at life!
