The Mudi definitely lives up to its name—it loves digging and getting muddy while working in the field.
Standing up to 18.5 inches tall and weighing 20 to 29 pounds, this medium-sized herding dog hails from Hungary, where it has worked alongside humans for centuries.
Known for being active, playful, and vocal, Mudis excel in obedience training thanks to their intelligence and strong work ethic.
2. Russian Toy

4. Biewer Terrier

The Biewer Terrier is a stylish new AKC member with a long, silky coat in black, tan, and white. Weighing around 8 pounds, these low-shedding dogs are great for families and surprisingly low-maintenance.
They love attention and socializing, getting along well with other dogs. However, their delicate build means they’re not ideal for homes with very young children.
5. Belgian Laekenois

You’ve likely heard of the Belgian Malinois, but the Belgian Laekenois is less known.

I was surprised to see the Dogo Argentino listed as a newcomer since the breed dates back to the early 20th century.
Originally bred as a fighting dog, it’s often misunderstood due to its history. In reality, these white-coated athletes are affectionate family companions who enjoy hunting in packs and relaxing at home.
Weighing nearly 100 pounds and standing 26 inches tall, they are powerful, energetic protectors with an intimidating presence.
7. Barbet
Year of AKC acceptance: 2020
Barbets, also known as French water dogs or “Dirt Dogs,” love splashing in water and getting muddy. Their curly, waterproof coat needs regular grooming despite the fun mess.
Weighing around 65 pounds, they don’t need much space but require plenty of daily exercise. Perfect for active families who enjoy outdoor adventures, Barbets also appreciate cozy downtime at home.
8. Azawakh
Year of AKC acceptance: 2019
Azawakhs look like deer—and they’re just as fast. Bred for hunting antelope and wild boar in West Africa, they’re among the most expensive dogs, sometimes costing up to $10,000.
Loyal but independent and stubborn, they’re wary of strangers and can be unpredictable with children. Weighing up to 55 pounds, their sleek build and stamina make them exceptional hunters.
9. Nederlandse Kooikerhondje
