Tom Waddington, a lone adventurer rowing across the Atlantic Ocean, had a surprising encounter: a pod of pilot whales who soon turned his quiet journey into a breathtaking spectacle.
However, the awe-inspiring moment took a frightening turn when one of the whales smacked into his boat…
Tom was on his 2,000 nautical-mile journey across the Atlantic when something extraordinary happened. Out of the blue, several long-finned pilot whales surfaced and approached his boat.
Initially, Tom was thrilled, watching in awe as a few curious whales swirled around him in a mesmerizing dance, their sleek bodies slicing through the water with grace. It was like a show created just for him.
Tom grabbed his camera to capture this special moment in a video, sharing:
“This is so cool! A pod of whales just coming around around the boat, playing around the boat.”
The whales were popping their heads above the surface and weaving in and out of the water like children at play. Tom couldn’t help but laugh, adding:
“I love it, but I’m scared they’re gonna hit my rudder. They’re so close I can hear them.”
Hours passed, and the whales continued to follow Tom’s boat. Initially, a group of ten gathered, but their number swiftly increased to twenty and then even more.
Tom was aware that the whales, each weighing several thousand pounds, could pose a significant threat to his boat and gear. Yet, that couldn’t reduce his amazement at the sight of these majestic creatures gathering around him, sharing:
“What a special treat! I’ve seen loads of whales, but they’ve just come to say hello.”
However, Tom’s wonder soon turned to fear when one of the whales slammed into his boat. The gentle encounter now became an intense ordeal as Tom realized how vulnerable he was in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by these enormous beings.
Although Tom could tell they were just having fun, he was understandably scared, as he shared:
“I don’t know what to do. They’re gonna hit the boat. I can’t believe it. It’s an amazing sight, but also so scary.”
Tom’s fear doubled when he realized the initial handful now grew into hundreds of whales encircling his boat. And while he was trying to row away from the pod, the whales continued to follow him.
For two solid hours, Tom navigated through the waters until the whales finally dispersed leaving him safe and with an experience he would treasure forever.
