Police Sergeant James Givens was patrolling around while enjoying his morning coffee. He stopped his police car near the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, next to Mill Creek.

Sergeant Givens was observing the area from his car when someone knocked on his door. However, once he looked out no one was there…

Just seconds later, another knock on the door made Sergeant Givens step out of his car. Next to his police car, a goose was desperately trying to get his attention.

Sergeant Givens thought the goose was hungry, so he tried sharing a piece of bread with her. However, the distressed goose was not at all interested!

She kept pacing around and going towards the creek, almost as if she wanted to show him something. Curios, Sergeant Givens decided to follow her.

Once he came down to the creek, he realized why the goose was so desperate. A little gosling was tangled up in a discarded balloon string, awaiting rescue.

Sergeant Givens phoned SPCA Animal Rescue, but unfortunately, they were unable to respond immediately. In that moment he knew he had to rescue the poor gosling by himself.

He called for backup, and although police officer Cecilia Charon never thought she would be rescuing a gosling on duty, she responded in no time!

While mama goose was pacing around them, Officer Charon scooped up her gosling. Slowly she untangled the balloon string from the gosling’s feet, freeing him from what could have been a fatal outcome. As officer Charon shared in a video:

“I just carefully unraveled it, unraveled it and you know then when we finally got the gosling unraveled, I set the baby down and it went off. Swam away with his mom.”

Later on, Police Officer Charon and Sergeant Givens were praised by their community for their heroic actions. Thanks to them, an innocent life was saved that day.
