1. Monarch Butterflies

Life span: 2-6 weeks

Native to Northern America, the Monarch butterflies have probably crossed your path at one point or another. 

They are easily identified by their vibrant orange and black markings and are famous for their incredible long-distance migrations.

2. Blue Morpho Butterflies

Life span: 115 days

The Blue Morpho Butterfly is found in tropical forests and is best recognizable by its blue wings. 

The blue iridescent color can change right before your eyes, depending on the angle of view!

3. Emerald Swallowtail Butterflies

Life span: 1-2 Weeks

This stunning butterfly is only found in the Far East and features a beautiful green and black pattern on its wings. The Emerald Swallowtail gets its name from its elongated wings that resemble a tail.

4. Apollo Butterflies

Life span: One Year

Typically found in high altitude and mountainous areas, the Apollo Butterfly is a gorgeous species with white wings and bright red eye-like spots on the wings. 

Sadly, the Apollo butterfly population has decreased in recent years.

Isn’t this one of the most stunning butterfly species you’ve ever seen? With their transparent wings, these gorgeous butterflies can blend in with any surroundings. This is a rare species so if you encounter one, consider yourself lucky!

6. Peacock Butterflies

This butterfly is famous for its striking wings. With eye-like spots, the Peacock butterfly hibernates during winter, folding its wings until it spreads them open again in March.

7. Blue Moon Butterflies

Life span: 7-20 days

The Blue Moon Butterfly is named for its stunning, moon-like spots on its wings. It’s a common species found in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.

8. Anna’s Eighty-Eight Butterflies

You can see from the picture above how this mesmerizing butterfly got its name. Their wing pattern strikingly resembles the number 88! They inhabit the humid tropical forests of Central America.

9. Cabbage White Butterflies

Although this butterfly is very common across the world and has only white wings, it definitely deserves a spot on our list. 

The gorgeous Cabbage White butterfly has a soft white color with two black spots on top of its wings.

Native to South America, this gorgeous species of butterflies has an iridescent blue color similar to the Blue Morpho butterfly. They are a common sight in South America and are truly breathtaking.
