Brady and Alex heard about this dog from a friend who had seen her wandering the streets of Los Cabos, Mexico. She was in terrible condition.
Alex shares how her heart sank when she saw her; she was in such rough shape. At first, the dog was scared and hesitant to approach them, but they took their time and gained her trust.
“She literally looked like a gargoyle.”
Alex was heartbroken by the dog’s condition, she looked like some kind of Gollum baby pup. They eventually managed to pet her and put a collar on her. That’s when Brady suggested they gently pick her up and put her in the car.
They all agreed, and Brady carefully lifted her. To their surprise, she was calm and completely trusted them. She even leaned on Brady’s shoulder, and he felt like his heart shattered into pieces:
“When I was able to pick her up, the look in her eyes wanted to give up.”
Alex Was Heartbroken By The Dog’s Condition
The dog was frightened and very nervous, but she was so exhausted that she didn’t have the energy to try and escape from her rescuers.
In the video, Brady explains that he and Alex are animal rescuers trying to save as many animals as possible in Mexico.
This little, skinny dog was their first rescue! They even asked each other how it was possible that she was still alive, given her terrible condition.
It was clear this poor dog had been living like that for years – she looked like she only had a few days left. To make things worse, the vet didn’t have any good news for them.
The Vet Had Nothing Good To Share
The dog was extremely emaciated and needed steroids, and her blood tests came back terrible. They had to leave her at the vet for the entire day, and Alex couldn’t believe how heartbroken they both were.
“Why did we take this first dog who’s gonna be so heartbreaking?”
To distract themselves from the sadness, Alex and Brady began planning…
They set up a little sofa next to their bed for the dog to sleep near them and started planning her meals and everything they’d do with her once she was home.
“We’ll go get her from the vet, and then we’ll set her up right here. We’ll give her, maybe, a little bit of food, and then… Lots of love!”
Alex And Brady Returned To Pick Up The Dog
When they arrived at the vet, they heard him calling the dog ‘Mija,’ which means ‘my girl,’ and Alex immediately said, “That’s her name, Mija.”
She looked so defeated and fragile, completely broken, but the vet gave them a glimmer of hope, saying that her fur might eventually grow back – some good news amidst everything.
Finally, Some Good News
Alex carried her all the way from the car to their home, and as they spoke sweetly to her, Mija started to become a bit more alert. It seemed like she could sense something good was about to happen.
They gently set her down and let her explore the room. Although she was nervous and weak, she still managed to take a few slow steps. Alex was overwhelmed with emotion:
“I was so in love with her the second we brought her home.”
“Our plan is to foster her until she’s healthy enough to find a forever home.”
Well, sometimes plans don’t really work out the way we hope…
After Mija explored the house a bit, Alex and Brady gave her a bath. They both kneeled down and gently washed her with soft sponges. It was a scary experience for all of them, especially since they could feel every bone in her body.
After the bath, Mija crawled into her bed and just wanted to sleep. For the first time, she felt safe enough to rest and relax. Sadly, it’s likely she had never slept so peacefully before.
The first few nights went well, though Mija didn’t really know how to do anything. Poor girl didn’t even know how to be a dog. Every day, they took her for a walk on the beach, but she would stop halfway because she had no energy.
Her Recovery Was Slow And Steady
But each day, Mija improved a little. On their fifth day, she almost made it to the ocean. Each day, she’d take 10 more steps, and five more days later, she even managed a little run and a jump.
Her fur started growing back, and it was clear she was healing. Mija loved her rescuers and foster parents, and well… They loved her too.
Three weeks later, Brady and Mija were running and playing across the beach! It was incredible!
But A Little Love Can Do Wonders
They were all so happy and proud of her recovery. Brady was feeling the best he had since they rescued her, thrilled to see how far Mija had come and how much better she was doing.
She gained weight, was finally happy and safe, and each day, as she grew more relaxed, her personality started to shine through.
Need I even say Mija stayed with them? Of course she did – who could have the heart to let this sweet girl go? Mija will now join Brady and Alex in their rescue missions, helping other dogs heal and recover, just like she did.
