Woman Helps 50-Year-Old Parrot Overcome Physical Limitations And Live A More Fulfilled Life

The feathery hero of today’s story teaches us that no matter how old you are, it’s never too late to reach your full potential and live life to the fullest.

Meet Sonny, a 50-year-old red-lored parrot who led a challenging life but found happiness thanks to his special human friend, Tina.

Although no one had ever seen him fly or even spread his wings, Tina dedicated herself to helping Sonny overcome his physical limitations and lead a more fulfilling life. Here’s their story!

When Tina Met Sonny

Tina and Sonny first crossed paths at Greyhaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary where Tina volunteered and Sonny had been surrendered a few years back.

Though she didn’t know much about his past, Tina suspected that Sonny had endured a difficult life, which had taken a toll on his health and contributed to his physical limitations.

Sonny’s Hospital Stay

Shortly after arriving at the shelter, Sonny started falling off his perch.

Concerned for his health, the sanctuary staff admitted him to the Night Owl Bird Hospital where poor Sonny spent several weeks under careful observation and treatment.

New Foster Feather For Dedicated Bird Mom

When he was finally released from the hospital, everyone started to wonder whether staying at the shelter was a good solution for Sonny. It became evident that he needed more than what the shelter could provide.

Because his condition required round-the-clock care, the decision was made to place him in a foster home – with none other than Tina!

Sonny’s Condition

As an elderly bird with several health challenges, Sonny’s daily life wasn’t easy. He needed medication for his heart and digestive system, and general pain relief.

On top of that, he still couldn’t perch, and his balance was shaky.

Despite it all, Sonny remained brave and unbothered, something Tina found truly inspiring!

Love Makes Magic Happen

As an experienced bird mom to nine feathered babies, Tina made it her mission to improve Sonny’s life and help him with his balance.

They started small, practicing walking for just a few minutes each day. Tina often wiggled her fingers on the floor to encourage Sonny to move toward her, and because he adored his new mom, he eagerly waddled over.

Progress Makes Perfect!

It wasn’t too long before Sonny became a pro at walking.

From a parrot who constantly rolled over during his hospital stay, he transformed into a bird who could walk for five minutes straight with perfect balance – three to four times a day!

Health Benefits Of Walking

As Tina mentioned in an interview, walking had significant health benefits for Sonny. It improved his balance and helped stimulate his gastrointestinal tract, encouraging him to go to the bathroom.

While walking may seem insignificant to some, for sweet Sonny, it was a game-changer! As Tina put it in one of her Instagram videos

“Helping one shelter bird won’t change the world, but it will change the world for that one bird.”

Sonny’s Sunny Personality

Tina wasn’t sure what to expect when she first brought Sonny home, but she quickly realized one thing: Sonny is such a sweet parrot.

He loves cuddling with his mom, looking out the window, and chewing on his toys – which Tina thoughtfully hangs within his reach, despite his perching issues.

He’s definitely the perfect feathery friend!

Friendship Like No Other

Tina and Sonny formed an amazing bond during their foster journey, becoming truly inseparable.

Besides their daily walking exercises, they also go on little outdoor adventures, where Sonny enjoys the beauty of nature from the comfort of his bird backpack. Tina truly does her best to give Sonny the best life possible.

Foster Fail?

Since they get along so well, Tina says she’ll likely be his permanent foster. In other words, Sonny may become her “foster fail” and officially join her family for good!

That wouldn’t be so bad, right? He’s happy in her home, and she’s happy to have him in her life. I can’t think of a better reason for her to make it official and adopt sweet Sonny!
