Alone and fragile, a starving dog lay curled up in the depths of a Mississippi forest, barely holding on.
Her rescuers were initially called to respond to a report about an “aggressive” Pitbull, but what they found was something entirely different—and utterly heartbreaking.
Instead of a dangerous dog, they discovered Halo, a blind and skeletal pup who had endured unimaginable neglect. If help hadn’t arrived when it did, she likely wouldn’t have made it.
In Mississippi’s rescue community, Stacey and her husband, Mike, have become lifelines for countless dogs in need.
Many of the pups rescued through Lucky Dog Refuge in Stamford, Connecticut, have passed through their loving hands, and Halo was no exception.
When the couple found her in the woods, she was nothing but skin and bones. Gently luring her out with food, they managed to coax her to safety, though it was clear she had suffered tremendously.
Her frail condition pointed to a tragic past—Halo had likely been used for breeding until she was no longer “useful.”
Instead of receiving care, she was abandoned in the wilderness to fend for herself. As Stacey Frazier shared in a Facebook post:
“Her ears were cut with a pair of scissors, and she was most likely used for breeding. One eye is injured and damaged, the other is blind probably from an eye disease that should have been treated.”
It’s gut-wrenching to think about what she endured, but finally, Halo was in the hands of people who truly cared.
Naming her Halo was a reflection of her delicate state—they weren’t sure if she would survive. But against the odds, she did.
Stacey took her home and immediately started treatment, ensuring she got the medication and nourishment she desperately needed.
There were moments when they feared she wouldn’t pull through, but Halo refused to give up. As Jessica shared in a video:
“We knew that her sight was definitely impaired, but we didn’t know if she was fully blind until the doctor confirmed it. We do think that she can see shadows, but she’ll just walk right into a telephone pole.”
For the first time in her life, Halo was being treated with kindness. She had never known love before, but under Stacey’s care, she finally understood what it felt like to be safe and cherished.
Her recovery took months, but when she was finally strong enough, it was time to take the next step—her journey to Connecticut, where a fresh start awaited her.
When she arrived at Lucky Dog Refuge, it was like meeting a brand-new dog. The frightened, skeletal pup from the woods had transformed into a happy and hopeful soul.
One thing quickly became clear—Halo had a weakness for ice cream! Every time she got a frozen treat, she lit up with excitement. As said by Jessica:
“She lets us know every day that she’s grateful for everything that she has now. She’s just an angel.”
Despite her newfound joy, there was still one thing missing—a forever home.
Then, something incredible happened. Not only did Halo find the perfect family to love her, but her new owners also decided to adopt Layne, her best friend from the shelter. Now, the two get to enjoy their new life together, side by side.
After all she’s been through, Halo has finally found the happiness and security she always deserved.
