When Erica moved into her new house in Louisiana, she heard a very interesting story about one of her neighbors.
Apparently, one family raised a bunch of ducks before setting them free to roam around the neighborhood.
Today, these semi-domesticated ducks are thriving, with plenty of food every day and a warm place to sleep every night.
However, Eric never imagined she’d become a main character in this ‘quack-citing’ saga. And it all started when she met one angry mama duck she affectionately dubbed Miss Waddles…
One ordinary day, Erica noticed Miss Waddles in one of the flowerbeds in her yard. Since the duck appeared angry and mean, Erica’s husband realized she actually made a nest in there.
To get on her good side – and help the new mom out – Erica gave Miss Waddles some food, which the duck gratefully accepted.
Little did she know this kind gesture would earn her a unique token of thanks the following morning.
As Erica opened the garage door of her Louisiana home one morning, she was greeted by over 30 ducks – all led by Miss Waddles!
Recounting the peculiar front door surprise in an interview, Erica said:
“It’s like she went and told all her friends, ‘Hey, I know a place!’”
Each morning brought more ducks; at one point, Erica counted 36, all eagerly awaiting food at her doorstep.
There were so many ducks Erica couldn’t possibly name them all – especially because with each new day more new ducks arrived, haha.
Feeding the ducks quickly became a part of Erica’s morning routine. As she put it:
“They know when my garage door opens that it’s feeding time.”
Erica also provided fresh water daily and occasionally offered cat toys and a kiddie pool for their entertainment, turning her property into a delightful haven for the local duck community.
For Erica, placing a duck crossing sign outside her house was a must. As she pointed out:
“I just want people to know that when they pass this house, they need to watch out for these ducks.”
For someone who never expected to enjoy the company of multiple ducks, Erica has surely grown to cherish every moment spent with her adorable feathery friends.
Sitting outside in their presence, chatting with them, and occasionally babysitting their ducklings became Erica’s favorite hobby – and I totally get the appeal!
Not only does Erica enjoy spending time with ducks, but she also gains significant benefits from this unique companionship.
The ducks have a positive impact on her artistic expression, serving as great inspiration for her paintings.
Additionally, they make excellent models for her photography…
…and stimulate her creativity during crocheting projects.
Even though she sometimes gets made fun of for hanging out with a bunch of ducks, Erica isn’t bothered. She cherishes her feathered friends and isn’t concerned with others’ opinions.
“They’re awesome creatures. They’re funny. And I do hope that any time I find a duck who needs help, that I could help them out.”
I admire Erica’s dedication and wish her the best in her efforts to assist as many ducks as she can.
