Many animals across the United States are raised for food and rarely see the light of the day.
What’s heartbreaking the most is that some don’t even survive the journey to factory farms, due to long distances, as well as extreme heat or cold.
According to research, more than 20 million animals raised for food die during transport. However, one farm pig named Dory was incredibly fortunate. She somehow fell off a moving truck onto a roadside, escaping a grim fate.
Dory was found on the side of a New York road, covered in sunburn and dirt. She was too weak to stand on her own, but little did she know that her fall had led her to a better, happier life.
Thankfully, local rescuers and Lollypop Farm, a humane society in Rochester, quickly brought her to safety.
Upon her arrival at the farm, Dory immediately received the professional care she so desperately needed. But she still needed a home where she could truly thrive.
The rescuers soon arranged for Dory to be transferred to Watkins Glen Sanctuary, where she continued receiving the necessary care.
As soon as she arrived there, she completely blossomed. With great care, healthy food, and plenty of love, Dory began showing her loving personality.
She enjoyed spending time with her caretakers, but most of all, she loved rolling in the mud.
Mario Ramirez, Director of Sanctuary Environment and Transport, fell in love with Dory the moment they met. He said in an interview:
“Dory is a perfect example of how resilient sentient beings can be. Her backstory and meeting her for the first time during the transport made it clear that she was so sweet and amazing. The love and trust I personally received from her touched me deeply.”
Dory is a one-in-a-million pig that escaped a grim fate, and because of that, she deserves all the love in the world.
Her story also highlights the plight of many other farm animals who aren’t as fortunate as she was. Mario added:
“The thought that so many others like Dory are suffering in the world is very daunting, to say the least. But, Dory’s rescue and the many other cases we have had over the years give me hope that their stories will continue to bring awareness.”
Though the staff at Watkins Glen adored Dory, they knew she couldn’t stay there forever. They began looking for the perfect home for her, and fortunately, it didn’t take long to find a trusted partner.
After making the necessary arrangements, the Watkins Glen team brought Dory to the Farm Animal Adoption Network (FAAN), which had just built a new shelter for rescued pigs.
The caretakers at the new farm welcomed Dory with open arms, giving her a new name, Honeydew, as the start of something new.
Now, she is living her life to the fullest along with Rhubarb and Pistachio, two other rescued pigs. Together, this trio is loved and adored by everyone who meets them.
In the end, although Dory, now Honeydew, was injured after falling off a moving truck, the accident ended up saving her life. If not for that fall, she wouldn’t be enjoying the joy and care that surround her now.
