Shannon James, a veterinarian and wildlife rehabilitator from Westchester County, NY, has rescued numerous wild animals over the past few years.
However, one of her rescue stories stood out to me so much that I had to share it with you. Get ready for this incredible rescue story!
One day while Shannon was at her vet’s office, she received a call from a distressed man who had no idea what to do.
While tending to his garden, he noticed a tiny newborn mouse that somehow got stuck in his fence.
To make matters worse, a snake was just about to catch the mouse when the kind-hearted man interfered.
Now he was standing there with a tiny mouse and had no idea how to take care of the little thing.
He searched for wildlife rehabilitation centers and the first name that popped up on his phone was Shannon James.
The man was unable to make the two-hour drive down to Shannon’s office and she couldn’t leave all her furry patients to go pick up the mouse.
So she came up with an unusual idea that worked perfectly. Shannon ordered an Uber, and the tiny mouse traveled safely in the front seat next to the driver.
Shannon named the tiny mouse Uba, after Uber! Once she took a good look at little Uba, Shannon realized that she was no older than a few days.
Her eyes were still closed and she was smaller than her thumb! Uba needed constant care and attention, as Shannon said in a video:
“I was up all night for probably the first couple of weeks, every couple hours feeding this little mouse.”
Uba even had her own small water bottle that kept her warm wherever she went. After a couple of weeks, she finally opened her eyes.
Shannon made sure to always keep Uba close to her and even made a small cozy place for her to sleep on the bedside table. As she shared:
“I feel like that made her more comfortable because then she just always had my, she just sensed that I was always there with her, like her real mother would be.”
This resulted in little Uba following Shannon wherever she went. If Shannon was doing errands around the house or in the garden, Uba would sit on her shoulder and keep her company.
Shannon made her a huge enclosure in her dining room, with plenty of toys, hiding nooks, and cozy places to sleep.
But what amazed Shannon was that this little wild mouse had no intention of leaving her! Every time Shannon took Uba out in the backyard, it was the perfect chance for her to go and live her life in the wild.
However, Uba was not interested in leaving Shannon. Who could blame her? She had an amazing enclosure, humans, and another animal sibling who adored her. Uba was living the best life possible!
This is how Shannon got an unlikely pet and if she could do it all over again, she most definitely would! Make sure to follow Shannon and Uba over on Instagram!
