6 Animals That Can Recognise Themselves In The Mirror

Did you know that not many animals can actually recognise themselves?

The so-called mirror test (or mark test) was developed to determine if animals have the ability of self-recognition.

These experiments involve marking certain body parts and then observing their behavior. Not many animals reacted, let alone noticed the markings.

Here’s the cool part, animals that tested positive on a self-awareness test also exhibit higher levels of cognitive intelligence. This means they also have great problem-solving skills, as well as memory and understanding. Pretty impressive, right?

1. Ants

A recent research suggests that some ants can recognise themselves in mirrors. This was concluded when they were looking at other ants through a glass without reacting.

While looking in the mirror, a lot of their behavior signaled that they do recognise themselves. For instance, some moved slowly, shook their antennae or even touched the mirror.

The fact that the ants didn’t think the mirror was another ant proves that these creatures are indeed self-aware.

2. Dolphin

A three-year study suggests that dolphins might start recognising themselves earlier than human children.

Not only do they recognise themselves, but also show great interest and joy.

They open their mouths, stick out their tongues, and move while observing themselves in the mirror.

I’m sure they are amazed to find out how cute they are.

3. Asian Elephant

Elephants are also among the animals who can recognise themselves.

When in front of a mirror, they spend a lot of time analysing and investigating their reflection.

These giants even make weird body movements, as if they’re checking themselves out.

As these tests went further along, scientists put markings on elephants’ heads. The elephants would usually start touching the markings, proving their self-awareness.

4. Orca Whale

In another self-awareness study, orcas were allowed to observe themselves in the mirror.

After looking at themselves for the first time, the mirror was taken away and markings were added on certain body parts. Upon seeing themselves again, the orcas’ behavior changed, clearly indicating that they understood the image in the mirror was their reflection.

I wonder what they thought of themselves.

These creatures are also among the animals who pass the mirror test.

In several studies, marks have been placed on their bodies where they usually wouldn’t be able to see them. Their reaction and behavior indicated that they indeed recognise themselves.

This ability highlights their high cognitive abilities and self-awareness.

6. Euresian Magpie

Widely known for their intelligence and admirable looks, the Euresian Magpies were the first non-mammal animals to recognise themselves in a mirror and pass the mirror test.

When colorful markings were placed on their feathers, the birds immediately tried to take them off. While others, who had invisible markings, didn’t.

This study suggested that such cognitive traits aren’t limited to mammals only. These clever birds proved us all wrong!
